Joy Davidson, AIA
Secretary, 2009-2010
Statement: When I first came to AIA I was enthusiastic - yet not sure how I would best be able to serve the organization. Quickly I found my niche, and over the past few years I have had the opportunity to work on amazing public outreach and community service projects, such as guiding a walking tour, volunteering at the Ossipoff Exhibit and lending a hand to Canstruction. I would be honored to continue to serve the AIA and have the opportunity to participate in even more outreach and public involvement programs while helping to cast a wider net and involve more AIA members in some of the rewarding programs and events undertaken throughout the year.

Louis Fung, AIA
Director (Architect Member, at-large) 2009-2010
Statement: In the course of building the company during the past 10 years, I feel an increase of responsibility not only to our good people with the company, but also a need to sustain the culture and passion of our very unique profession. To achieve this goal, I believe that AIA could play a key role in the nurture of our emerging successors. This nomination has humbled me deeply and I feel that I have just been given a chance to fulfill a grander goal in life in serving our professional organization and community.
As a current board director, I have a taste of what it takes to serve on the board and I also have a realistic understanding of the challenges we face as a local board. Through some of the programs and task forces which I have participated as a board member and as a firm, I find it very fulfilling serving on the board and our members this year. It is my desire to continue to accomplish the tasks we have just started, such as the Strategic Planning Committee.

Robin Inaba, AIA
Director (Architect Member, at-large) 2009-2010
Statement: Robin would like to serve on the AIA Honolulu Board of Directors and be instrumental in increasing member involvement in the AIA. I believe that participating in our organization benefits us by connecting with our peers and increasing our sense of belonging to an organization where we share common values and concerns.
One of the avenues to increase involvement is through our state licensing requirement for continuing education, where offerings of leadership and knowledge workshops will enable us to become well rounded professionals.
The American Institute of Architects is a huge resource at the community, state and national level! All the facets of the organization are available to us and when accessed (by volunteering and participating), provide us with the support and opportunities to grow ourselves individually and professionally. The letters” AIA” represent much more than mere initials after our names.
As architects, we have the potential to positively impact our communities by implementing sustainability through architecture and sharing our knowledge of our built environment to improve our quality of life. Appreciative and proud that I am an active member of this great organization, I would like to inspire others to feel and do the same.

Eric Nelson, AIA
Director (Architect Member, at-large) 2010-2011
Statement: Architecture is one of the few professions that is devoted specifically to the design of our built environment. Our individual buildings and our collective planning shape our communities and make them unique, livable and, hopefully, beautiful. The AIA provides a forum for like-minded people who are advocates of good design and who are committed to make our communities better. The AIA allows us the opportunity to lay down our competitiveness and work together to make our communities the best they can be. My perspective is a regional perspective, having managed offices in Hawaii, San Francisco, Alaska and Guam. The interrelatedness of our common problems makes the AIA an important forum for design professionals to explore innovative design solutions.

Sandi Quildon, AIA
Director (Architect Member, at-large) 2010-2011
Statement: “Problems are opportunities in disguise”. Every problem presents opportunities to consider alternative approaches and explore creative design solutions. Challenges of our current economy and increased competition for securing projects present opportunities to collaborate and communicate with others inside/outside our industry. It also presents opportunities to discover emerging areas of new work in areas such as sustainable design, energy modeling and project delivery. I’d like to serve as a conduit for encouraging, nurturing and growing our awareness of such opportunities strengthening AIA’s outreach, resources and benefit to membership & the public.

We have joined in discussions with other Big Island design professionals and County officials on new code amendments, drainage ordinances and political structures. I believe it is the Sections responsibility to poll their members to arrive at consensus and use this to assist the County of Hawai’i to make more informed judgment on laws that affect the future built environment.
