2013 Architecture Month

Fun, Free & Educational Events

April was Architecture Month and AIA Honolulu offered lots of events that was FREE, FUN, EDUCATIONAL and OPEN to Everyone - AIA Honolulu Members, Residents & Visitors!

We started these fun annual events seven years ago and will try to continue this great tradition to highlight the power of good design in making our communities better places to live, work and play and also generate a discussion of design in Hawaii.

Hawaii Public Radio Pledge Drive

Help support Quality Programming and the Arts in Hawaii

AIA Honolulu architects has participated in the Hawaii Public Radio pledge drive for many years and truly enjoy taking part in keeping quality programs and arts alive in Hawaii.

During our shift, AIA Honolulu architects answers the phones, take pledges and offers challenges. This year we offered a free walking tour + refreshments to some of the phone pledges which proved very successful. On April 10 their "Challenge 2013" came to an end after an amazing 8 day campaign.

Celebrate Architecture Month & Newly Licensed HI Architects

AIA Firm Supporters:

For the fifth year, AIA Honolulu hosted a special party during Architecture Month to kick off the month and also celebrate our Newly Licensed Architects in Hawaii (3/12 -2/13).

In 2013 the event too place on Thursday, April 11 from 6pm-8pm at the Lotus Downtown.

Over 9 new architects were able to come and over 70 people gathered together for a night of delicious pupus and drinks.

It was a festive event for newbies and old timers and everyone in between to get together. Our Board, staff and allied members were there and even people fro outside the field came to sho their support.

Architectural Walking Tour in Waikiki

On Sat. April 13 from 9am-12:00pm AIA Honolulu invited the public to join us for our Seventh Annual Walking Tour, led by AIA architects

This year, for the first time, we explored Waikiki and visit some very interesting buildings. Staggered tours started from the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Waikiki and over the course of ~ 1.5 hours, walkers meet docents along the way to learn about some of the architecturally significant buildings in Waikiki

This event was a HUGE success with ~300 people attending.

A special Mahalo to the Royal Hawaiian Hotel and the Moana Surfrider Hotel for serving as our beginning and end-of-tour hosts.

Architectural Film Night: Biophilic Design

For our architectural Film Night this year, hosted on both Oahu and the Big Island during Architecture Month, we decided to show a documentart titled "Biophilic Design: Architecture Life".

This film looked at the evolution of architecture and highlights designs that have succeeded in connecting people and their environment. The practice of biophilic design can create more healthy, productive built environments for today’s communities around the world.

This event was a fun event with over 60 peole signing up to attend. We hope to be able to show this film during another occation since we had to start a waiting list.

Family Sunday at the Honolulu Museum of Arts

On Sun. April 21 from 11am-3pm, AIA Honolulu architects led over 250 keik'si in an art design project at the Honolulu Museum of Art for their Bank of Hawaii Family Sunday.

The AIA Honolulu activity this year was to create a 3-D Building Collage - Design your own space.

Our table was filled with children for the entire event and they came up with the most amazing creations. They all seemed to have a great time and our volunteers did an amazing job assisting them.

Big Island Event: Extreme Force Design Workshop

On Sunday April 21 from 12pm-4pm there was an Extreme Force Design Workshop at the Kealakehe High School Cafeteria on the Big Island.

For this workshop they welcomed 3rd -7th grade students to build shelters for a set of mini crash test dummies that had to resist both a shake table and wind tunnel.

The goal of the workshop was to inform students and their parents about natural forces and about the design processes.

Over 20 children attended this amazing workshop and was thrilled with everything the learned.

  • ACS (Air Conditioning Specialists) - Who built the wind tunnel and supplied the fan and duct materials.
  • Roy Lambrecht Woodworker - Who supplied, cut, and sanded all the plywood model bases.
  • All Out Carpet Cleaning - For the use of fans.


Architectural Firm Crawl in Downtown Honolulu

On Fri. April 26 from 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm our annual Firm Crawl took place.

For this events attendees get a map over participating firms who will be opening their doors to the public and they are welcome to visit them in any order they like. This is a fun way for the public to see what a Design Studio looks like and learn about the people who work their, their projects and a chance to ask any questions they might have.

This is also a fun event for our members to visit other firms and network with people they know.

For 2013 over 100 people signed up online to participate and from the word on the street they had a great time.
