AIA Honolulu is celebrating its 11th Annual Architecture Month and we are pleased to offer free and low-cost activities for the public during the month of April. 2017 Architecture Month Theme: “Our Urban Fabric – Design Honolulu.”

These annual events got started to highlight the power of good design in making our communities better places to live, work and play and also generate a discussion of design in Hawaii. We hope by elevating awareness of architecture, you will be inspired by your surroundings on a daily basis.
Hundreds of island residents and visitors enjoy these architecture and design-related events each April. Make sure you are one of them in April 2017.

MARCH 31 - PechaKucha Night of Design Presentations

AIA Honolulu will celebrate with a Pecha Kucha night of Design Presentations.
When: Friday, March 31, 5:30pm - 8:00pm
Where: Center for Architecture, Honolulu
Please help usher in Architecture Month with presentations by AIA member architects, interior designers, educators, fine artists and writers in the fast-paced Pecha Kucha-style: a total of 20 slides per presenter with only 20 seconds of commentary per slide.
APRIL 7 - Architectural Firm Crawl in Downtown Honolulu: Open House Night

Have You ever wondered what an architecture studio looks like or what an architect does? If so, please join us to learn more about the projects local architects are currently working on by joining the free “Firm Crawl.”
When: Friday, April 7, 5:00pm - 8:00pm
Where: Various Downtown Honolulu Firms
The public is welcome to visit all participating AIA firms in any order they liked. This is a fun way to see what a Design Studio looks like and learn about the people, their projects and ask any questions. Pre-register to receive a map of participating firms who will open up their doors to the public.
APRIL 8 - Architectural Walking Tour: University of Hawaii at Manoa

You are invited to join, by reservation, in a Walking Tour of UH Manoa's campus core, led by AIA Honolulu member-architects for a rare opportunity to explore the central campus from a design perspective.
When: Saturday, April 8, 8:00am - 12:00pm
Where: UH Manoa's Campus
Over the course of two hours, walkers will learn about architecturally significant historic and recent buildings and spaces on the flagship University of Hawaii campus.
Cost: $15 per person. Advanced reservations required.
APRIL 8 - Create Award-Winning Photographs with Jim Doyle

Attend a special photography course created especially for AIA Honolulu during Architecture Month titled “Creating Award-Winning Photographs of Architectural Projects.”
When: Saturday, April 8, 9:00am - 4:00pm
Where: Center for Architecture, Honolulu
Master photographer, Jim Doyle, Allied Member of Applied Photography has honed techniques to create award-winning images of architectural projects.
Cost: $75 AIA Honolulu Members, $55 Students and $105 General Public.
APRIL 15 - Architectural Photography Workshop with T.E. Garduque, FAIA

AIA Honolulu presents a 3-Part Architectural Photography Workshop during Architecture Month in April titled "Film Noire and Architecture: The Dark Side,” intended for the advanced hobbyist photographer.
When: Saturday, April 15, 8:00am - 4:00pm
Where: Center for Architecture, Honolulu
This workshop will be guided by lauded architect T. E. Garduque, FAIA, who will provide instruction for field practice of architectural photography, including recitation, light-room process and a street shoot.
Cost: $75 AIA Honolulu Members, $55 Students and $105 General Public.

APRIL 21 - Hawaii Public Radio Pledge Drive 8am-10am
Help support Quality Programming and the Arts in Hawaii
AIA Honolulu architects has participated in the Hawaii Public Radio pledge drive for many years and truly enjoy taking part in keeping quality programs and arts alive in Hawaii. During our shift, AIA Honolulu architects answered the phones, took pledges and offers challenges. Last year we offered a free walking tour + refreshments to some of the phone pledges.

April 14: Young Architects Workshop
Sign Up with DMAC! This workshop is presented by AIA Honolulu - Hawaii Island Section and the Donkey Mill ArtCenter (DMAC) as part of our 11th Annual Architecture Month Celebration on the Big Island. View Workshop flyer (PDF).
This is a hands-on workshop for students age 12-18. Students will explore daylighting and ventilation design concepts through drawing and model-building. Instructor is Shaun Roth, AIA with other Architect volunteers. The cost is $45 members/ $55 non-members, maximum 16 student.

USk O‘ahu and AIA Honolulu Announce Free Sketch Events + Enter our Raffle!

These are two informal get-togethers for sketchers of all experience levels to draw and paint in downtown Honolulu. Join us to share your artwork, exchange tips and tricks for sketching, and learn a little about the architecture in the area from a local architect.
