Membership Status Change: Member Emeritus

For Architect members to qualify you need to be in good standing with the Institute for 15 successive years immediately prior to your application, and either:
- has attained the age of 70, and is retired from the profession of architecture, or
For Associate members to qualify you need to have been in good standing in the Institute for 15 successive years immediately prior to his or her application, and either
- is so incapacitated as to be unable to work in the profession.
- has attained the age of 70, and is retired from an occupation related to the profession of architecture or
Emeritus members are not required to fulfill the AIA/CES requirement to retain membership. Download a FAQ.
- is so incapacitated as to be unable to work in an occupation related to the profession of architecture.
Transferring In/Out of the State?
Then you need to fill out a Transfer Request Form and email to AIA National. At the written request of a member, the Institute shall transfer the member’s assignment from one chapter to another provided that the transferring member either lives or works within the territory of the new chapter. AIA Bylaws state that a member must be assigned to a local chapter based on their work or home zip code.
(Former) AIA members who do not renew their membership by March 31, 2016 will be lapsed. Lapsed architect members no longer have the right to use the AIA (or Associate AIA designation for associate members).
