Featured Weekly

Owner/Developer: D. R. Horton | General Contractor: Vertical Construction | Concrete Subcontractor: Foundations Hawaii

Placing of a non-structural concrete topping, over a waterproof membrane, both at lanais off of living units and at common area corridors.

First Phase: A concrete mix design was used that had a w/c ratio of 0.63 and was reinforced with a ¾” long Micro synthetic fiber at the rate of 1#/cy. After control joints were cut into the concrete, the end result was that there was shrinkage cracking of the concrete at frequencies that seemed excessive, resulting in an unattractive appearance.

Second Phase: In consultation with Kimo Scott, distributor for VAPOR LOCK SHRINKAGE REDUCING ADMIXTURE, tests were performed using a mix design with a w/c ratio of 0.50, utilizing 2 ¼” long MACRO SYNTHETIC FIBERS/FORTA FERRO at the rate of 5#/cy with the addition of super plasticizer to achieve a slump of 7” to allow for pumping.

Thanks to HC&D for the mix design and the assistance of Kimo Scott of OK Hardware & Construction Supply in supplying HC&D with both the VAPOR LOCK SHRINKAGE REDUCING ADMIXTURE and the FORTA FERRO MACRO SYTHETIC fibers. View flyer with more information.

Architects Oppose U.S. Withdrawal from Climate Treaty

Reaffirm Commitment to Mitigating Climate Change
The AIA reaffirmed its commitment to climate change mitigation and announced it was opposing the Administration's decision to withdraw the United States as a signatory to the Paris Agreement. That accord, signed in late 2015 within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), commits the international community to fighting harmful greenhouse gas emissions.
Please attribute to AIA President Thomas Vonier, FAIA:   "The United States must remain a leader in the battle to cease harmful and needless practices that damage the planet and its climate, acting out of both environmental concerns and national economic interests. Instead of helping our economy, as the Administration contends, withdrawing from the Paris Agreement will put us behind our major global competitors." Click here for full press release.
