Happy Fourth of July

AIA Honolulu Closed in Observation of Fourth of July

The AIA Honolulu office will be closed on Monday, July 3rd and Tuesday July 4th in observance of Independence Day.  We will return to work on Wednesday, July 5.  We wish all our members a Safe and Happy Holiday!

July 5: AIA Honolulu Housing Committee Meeting

This committee was created to promote the development of safe, attractive, accessible, and affordable housing. It will provide leadership, advocacy, and education to the profession and the public in matters related to housing design.

When/Where: Wednesday, July 5, 12-1pm at the Center for Architecture, Honolulu.

July 12: AIA/GCA 3-Part Series! The Life of a Drawing – From Napkin Sketch to As-Built and Everything In-between ( 1 LU)

The Pre-Project:  Planning and Entitlement, Design and Drawing

First in a 3-part series on “The Life of a Drawing - From Napkin Sketch to As-Built and Everything In-between” as we gain an insight to the rarely seen parts of a project.  This seminar will help you understand what is involved to start a project from an idea and all of the things that are required before construction drawings even start.  We will also learn about the programming process and how it ties into design drawings and culminating with understanding the effort of approximately 15 architectural staff to complete the construction drawings.
Presenters: Ross Morishige, AIA and Tracy Camuso, AICP from G70

Cost: $10 for AIA Honolulu & GCA members and $20 for Non-members.

We will be covered ARE 5.0 Project Planning & Design (PPD) which corresponds to portions of the ARE 4.0 exams of Building Design & Construction Systems (BDCS), Structural Systems (SS), Building Systems (BS), and Schematic Design (SD).  We will also review the ARE 4.0 BDCS vignettes for any 4.0 exam takers in attendance.

Long & Associates / Longhouse Design+Build welcomes Tai Sunnland, AIA to the firm.  Tai is a registered Architect in the State of Hawaii and is a second generation Architect after his father, Warren Sunnland.  

With nearly ten years of experience in the design and construction administration of high-end custom single family and multifamily resort residences, he has practiced on contemporary residential & resort projects in various countries in Southeast Asia.  He earned a Doctor of Architecture degree from the University of Hawaii School of Architecture and is NCARB certified.  Tai joins Longhouse Design+Build with a strong belief in the company’s Architect-driven Design-Build project delivery method which produces cost-effective, yet exceptional luxury products for their clients.

  • July 7: Public Interest Design Workshop for Design Professionals & Community Partners
    Design professionals will learn skills and methods to actively engage in "Public Interest Design" through fee-based practice.  Instructors and special guest speakers will present in-depth case studies of the participatory processes and the outcomes of their award-winning Public Interest Design projects. Successful completion of this AIA, ASLA, & USGBC accredited workshop qualified participants for 8 HSW CEUs/PDHs and advanced online seminars leading to certification as a SEED Professional.

  • July 13: USGBC Hawaii Event - Bike me to your LEEDer
    Learn about the future of Hawaii’s sustainable transportation infrastructure by joining a group bike ride hosted by Hawaii Bicycling league and a workshop hosted by the USGBC Hawaii.  Bike ride will loop through Kaka’ako, past a LEED gold building and end at the Atrium in SALT. Come and meet with proactive members of the community and hear from local experts about walkable and bikeable cities, LEED credits for transit oriented development, and how to incorporate green infrastructure into complete street designs.
