AIA Hawaii State Council

Update from AIA SpeakUp 2017 Denver, Colorado

Read full report by Brent I. Tokita, AIA, LEED AP.

Governmental Advocacy should be a high priority for any AIA chapter and you can’t get any higher than the 2nd Annual AIA SpeakUp in Denver, Colorado.  AIA Hawaii State Council provided a generous scholarship for me to attend this event which provided seminars and an interesting group exercise to promote advocacy skills through the grassroots of AIA.  There was representation from across the country with local chapters ranging from a few dozen to thousands of members.  Many were very inexperienced in advocacy whereas other had well-developed Political Action Committees(PACS) and targeted action plans.

Sep. 20-22: 2017 Hawaii Congress of Planning Officials Conference

Register Online! The City & County of Honolulu Department of Planning & Permitting invites you to the 2017 Hawaii Congress of Planning Officials Conference, September 20 – 22, 2017 at the Alohilani Resort Waikiki.

Hawaii is home to the most isolated metropolis in the world, Honolulu, and, just like any other community, we depend on our neighbors, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, Maui, and Hawaii for social, economic, and cultural support. Isolation, and the conditions associated with it, breeds a unique set of circumstances across our island chain. Public, private, nonprofit, activist, neighbor island and volunteer groups must continue to work together. Developing stronger partnerships with our neighbors is paramount to the success of the Hawaiian Islands.
