Introducing The Year of the Advocate

Though policymakers deeply affect the practice of architecture and the built environment, less than a third of AIA members have met with their elected representatives and few serve on community boards and commissions. This absence costs us influence and the ability to shape our futures.  Throughout 2015, AIA Advocacy will provide tools and inspiration on how you can stand up for your profession and make your voice heard. Get involved!

AIA Grassroots 2015: Leadership & Legislative Conference Mar 4-6

Guided by a vision for the future of the profession, the conference provides AIA leaders with tools to influence and pursue action that will strengthen their components, firms, communities and society at large.  There are opportunities for creative dialogue through general sessions, workshops, networking and peer to peer connections. Leaders exchange information and ideas, provide input on AIA initiatives and advocate the AIA’s federal agenda to members of Congress, working collectively toward a better future for architects. The agenda emphasizes component leadership and includes a dynamic legislative conference and workshops designed to help component officers and aspiring leaders become effective chapter and civic leaders. AIA Hawaii Island STEM Camp Jan. 8

On Jan. 8, 2015 Hawaii Island Architects again teamed up with the Kealakehe High School Tiki Techs robotics team to present Architecture Day at the Tiki Tech’s annual STEM Camp.  This year students in grades 3 through 8 learned about how electromagnetic radiation influences architectural design.  First students learned some basics about light; infrared, visible, ultraviolet light, and how to predict the location of the Sun.  Next they took notes and measurements on a series of experiments demonstrating how energy passes through different materials.  Each student completed a project that involved turning a closed cardboard box into a day-lighting model of a room.  Students were also able to see how architects use digital modeling to study sunlight and to try their hand at SketchUp.

Big thanks to Architects Shaun Roth, AIA, Terry Cisco, AIA, Paul Donoho, AIA, John Parazette, AIA, and Zon Sullenberger, AIA for mentoring students at the event and to Air Conditioning Specialists, Inc. for the use of their infrared imaging equipment. View more images.
