Canstruction® Competition

Canstruction® Competition September 18 at Pearlridge Center Uptown - "Kids-Can"

The Fifth Annual AIA Honolulu Annual Canstruction® competition will be held on Saturday, September 18, 2010 where teams will actively “canstruct” their sculptures from 9 am to ~2 pm. Completed structures will be on display for voting through Sunday, Oct. 3.

Theme:  The theme this year is "Kids-Can!"

Hawaii’s design community believes we can build a world without hunger, one can at a time and drive positive change through the power of design. To that end, teams of local architects, allied design and engineering professionals will “canstruct” giant structures made entirely of thousands of cans of food in Hawaii’s Fifth Annual Canstruction® competition.

Members of the public are encouraged to participate by visiting Canstruction® and bringing canned food donations to support Hawaii’s hungry families. The Canstruction® structure that receives the most votes from members of the public (one can of donated food equaling one vote – but only cans count!) during the two-week exhibition will be named People’s Choice Award winner.  The structures will be taken down on Sunday, Oct. 3 and all the canned food will be donated to the Hawaii Foodbank.

We all have a role in building stronger communities and to enusre that everyone is a winner… in this time of need.  Over four years, the Canstruction® competition has raised 165,000 pounds of canned food for the Hawaii Foodbank.

Who can Enter?  All AIA Honolulu Member Firms, Architects, Associate Architects and Local Allied Members.  Any group of Small Firm Practitioners are welcome to band together to form a team like last year. You can also include allied partners like engineering firms and product representatives if you would like to create a multi-disciplinary team.

A Message from the Hawaii Foodbank

A child going hungry is simply unacceptable.  Yet without your help, thousands of island keiki are at risk of hunger.  Scientific evidence suggests that hungry children are less likely to become productive citizens.  A child who is unequipped to learn because of hunger and poverty is more likely to be poor as an adult.  As such, the existence of childhood hunger in Hawaii threatens our future prosperity.

Nearly 33,000 of our island keiki are served through the safety net of Hawaii Foodbank and member agencies. With your help island parents are able to provide for their children, hot meals are provided during the summer -when school lunch is not available and hundred of children living in poverty are sent home with a backpack of nutritious food to ensure they return to school on Monday, having eaten over the weekend and ready to learn.
