The Chinese New Year took place on Monday, January 23 and this marked the beginning of the Year of the Dragon, more specifically, the Year of the Water Dragon - something that happens only once every 60 years.
This legendary animal is believed to bring optimism and hope for better times ahead since the dragon is a symbol of power, superior control and change - usually from bad to good. Water is claimed to have a calming effect on the Dragon's fearless temperament and these Dragons are better equipped to re-evaluate a situation because they also understand the art of patience.
Officials in China, Taiwan and other Asian countries are expecting a baby boom to happen in these countries, with normally extremely low birth rates, since the people born in Dragon years are to be honored and respected. These children are suppose to become energetic and warm-hearted, charismatic, lucky at love and egotistic. They will be natural born leaders, good at giving orders and doing what is necessary to remain on top. Happy New Year!

The path from architecture school to architect is about more than ARE tests, IDP hours, and bathroom tile pattern design. The newly minted architects that are best prepared to contribute to firm practice have (of course) done all this stuff, but they’ve also been eased into firm culture, mentored, and encouraged to use their design talents to give back.

Breaking ground on an extravagant and unique residential design this spring or summer? After 11 seasons in the United Kingdom, the "Grand Designs" TV show is coming to America, and it's looking to showcase some unique designs in Hawaii. It's a leading home renovation and design show that is now also airing in Australia and has spun off its own monthly magazine and an annual Grand Designs convention.
If you have an upcoming "grand design," please email Joe Harworth directly or housedesigncasting@gmail.com or call 818.748.2527. He is anxious to work with our local AIA Honolulu member architects, their firms and the homeowners to showcase your unique residential projects from the design stage (yes, before the start of construction!) through completion.
The 16th annual AIA/COTE Top Ten Awards is one of the best known sustainable design recognition programs in the nation. The program recognizes projects that address environmental challenges through design that seamlessly integrates architecture, technology, and natural systems.

"Why Architects Matter"
A recent study by Georgetown University’s Center for Education and the Workforce shows that architecture majors have the highest levels of unemployment: 14% among bachelor’s graduates ages 22 to 26. The study, which drew from 2009 and 2010 U.S. Census data, connected undergraduate majors with employment status and earnings.
Surprised? Don’t be. Consider this: prior to 2008, the construction industry was roughly 10% of overall GDP, whereas now it is less than 6%. That is a staggering decline, mostly due to a bad economy. But demand for architectural services will rapidly increase in the near and distant future. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is projecting a 2.1% increase in construction spending this year already (following several years of declines), with a jump to a 6.4% increase in 2013. Looking further ahead, we predict that by 2035, 75% of the built environment will be new construction or undergo substantial renovations. Click HERE to read more.
