New This Week

AIA 150 outreach efforts gearing up

As we have been reporting, The American Institute of Architects is celebrating its 150th Anniversary this year, and programs are being planned locally to mark this occasion with local flair.  Our KHNL 8 Spotlight on Architecture series has been a great start to our media outreach efforts.  See separate Spotlight column below for more information about the third and most recent TV broadcast.  We will continue working with KHNL Channel 8 as part of our year-long efforts to foster public awareness of the richness of our built enviroment and the value of good design in making our communities better places for us all.

Important Dates: The entire month of April is AIA 150 Month in Hawaii.  This was announced at our AIA 150  Kick-off party in January 2007 which included a special presentation on behalf of Governor Lingle. The framed proclamation now hangs in our office.  Stop by.

On April 5, Mayor Mufi Hannemann will conduct a signing ceremony at Honolulu Hale where he will proclaim April 9–14, 2007 as AIA 150 Week: Celebrating Our Past, Designing Our Future in the City and County of Honolulu.  Due to limited space, this event is by invitation, but we will be sure to share the text of that proclamation, and of course, we will post photos of the signing event.

Beginning on April 7- 21, look for our display of seventy (70) AIA 150 banners along King and Bishop Streets in downtown Honolulu.  We are fairly confident we can boast the largest street banner display of any AIA Chapter across the country!  Speaking about banners, we will also display the banners of our 2006 Design Awards winning projects at Kapolei Hale between April 5-April 20.  All this is just the beginning of a very exciting month and year to come.

AIA Honolulu Memo - 1st Quarter 2007:  You can read more about our upcoming AIA 150 plans and other Chapter updates in the hot off the press AIA Honolulu Memo that will be mailed to you in the beginning of next week.  Click on the link above to preview the Memo in full color online! The file is PDF so you can also save and  print a color copy.

Did you see the third KHNL Spotlight on Architecture March 21?

On Wednesday, March 21, 2007 between 5:30am - 6:30am and then again at 5:00pm - 6:00pm,  KHNL reporter Mary Simms interviewed Frank Haines, FAIA, and Corrine Chun Fujimoto, the curator at Washington Place, in our third news spotlight of some of Hawaii's historic architectural treasures.  Go to KHNL's website to watch one of the three segments that was aired live on March 21.  To locate the AIA video segment,  point your mouse to the thumbnail picture that brings up the text "Historic Building Tour" under the News 8 Today Video Player button.

View pictures from the live broadcast at Washington Place on our AIA Honolulu web site.

AIA Honolulu Walking Tours:  Washington Place is one of the feautured sites on our AIA Honolulu Architectural Walking Tour. See reminder below under Upcoming Events.  We are seeking new guides!  Guests in town? For tour reservations, please call Bonnie McIntyre at (808) 545-4242.  We also offer a print booklet for sale at the AIA Honolulu office for only $5.00:  Exploring Downtown. The book was published by Frank Haines, FAIA, in association with Clifford Projects, Inc. Historic information edited by Glenn Mason, AIA.

AIA National introduces AIA Contract Documents on Demand

Coming soon! The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is pleased to introduce the AIA Documents on Demand eShop. The AIA Documents on Demand eShop is a Web site that provides customers 24/7 access to the 10 most popular AIA Contract Documents. The eShop allows customers to purchase individual documents and then print them immediately.  At the eShop, customers will be asked to provide limited project-specific information. They will then be able to print the documents and complete them as they would any paper document purchased from an AIA document distributor. The only tools needed are an Internet Browser (the AIA Web site supports Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox) and a printer. Mac users may access the documents using a current version of Mozilla Firefox.  Go to the Documents on Demand eShop for a list of what documents are available on-demand and to purchase AIA Contract Documents.
