Historic Hawai‘i Foundation & AIA Honolulu presents

Greening Measures for Hawaii’s Heritage Homes

This five-course workshop series was designed to share measures historic homeowners can implement to save energy, conserve resources and integrate respectfully with local culture and natural geography in a way that is harmonious and compatible with a property’s historic character and features.

Historic preservation and sustainability go hand and hand. The series will help historic homeowners learn to reduce their homes’ carbon footprint while retaining the properties’ historic integrity.

Goals are to provide information and knowledge to help owners preserve the historic property; save energy, money and resources; and contribute to the natural health and vibrancy of their neighborhoods.  The series will encourage historic homeowners to approach maintenance of their properties through the lens of sustainability in order to provide affordable and accessible sustainability tools and techniques to incorporate into their preservation maintenance plans.

Approach:
Focus is on feasible, affordable projects that are implementable by homeowners. Technical content will be designed for lay people with recognizable and achievable outcomes. Implementing sustainability measures for historic properties requires special awareness and consideration.

Each of the five classes will include 90-minutes of instructional time, with an initial presentation by the instructor, class discussion to address case studies or relevant examples, and, where appropriate, hands-on activities. Technical content will be based on the Secretary of Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties, including the Guidelines for Sustainability, with explanations of how the standards and guidelines are applied to Honolulu’s building styles, materials, climate and local circumstances.

Specific details for each class, as well as registration information and costs, will be available soon!
