Grading & Inspection Seminar

This course will teach Specifiers the importance of correct grades and coverage. Specifiers will be shown how to measure a bundle of shakes and shingles for coverage, how to inspect the bundle for defects, and how to calculate for the final percentage. Off grade product will be shown and explained as well as tools of the trade. This seminar will increase Specifiers’ comfort level with cedar shake and shingle specifications by discussing correct grades, product types and the inspection process.


Course Outline:
• Show how to measure a bundle of shakes and/or shingles for coverage
• Open a bundle to show how to look for defects and show how to calculate final percentage
• Show tools used, gauge, measuring tape and inspection book
• Will teach the difference between edge grain & flat grain

Learning Objectives:
Learning Objective 1: Participants will be able to specify cedar shakes & shingles accurately and correctly.
Learning Objective 2:  Understand cedar shake and shingle grade and product specification requirements.
Learning Objective 3: Participants will understand the importance of the inspection process to ensure quality.
Learning Objective 4: Participants will be able to specify cedar shakes and shingles for their clients accurately and correctly by understanding the grading and product specification requirements.

Anthony (Tony) Hyatt, Cedar Shake & Shingle Bureau (“CSSB”), Northern Midwest District Manager, is an experienced field representative in business to business and direct sales, small business management, and regional marketing of roofing products. Mr. Hyatt most recently worked in the steel roofing industry, offering sales, product application training, estimating and consulting. He has worked on a number of different roof installations and conducted hands on educational training seminars in multiple states as well as one in Japan. Mr. Hyatt also owned and operated his own roofing company in the State of Wisconsin.
