AIA-GCA Seminar Series: The Life of a Drawing – From Napkin Sketch to As-Built and Everything In-between

The Pre-Project:  Planning and Entitlement, Design and Drawing

The construction drawings took 2 years, while the construction took another 2.5 years.  Did you realize that there is another phase of the project that takes even longer than either of those?

The planning, entitlement, programming and conceptual design of the Hilton Hawaiian Village Grand Islander took 3 years.

Come to the first in a three-part series on “The Life of a Drawing - From Napkin Sketch to As-Built and Everything In-between” as we gain an insight to the rarely seen parts of a project.  This seminar will help you understand what is involved to start a project from an idea and all of the things that are required before construction drawings even start.  We will also learn about the programming process and how it ties into design drawings and culminating with understanding the effort of approximately 15 architectural staff to complete the construction drawings.

Discussion and Q&A will follow the presentation.

Presenting the topics will be: Ross Morishige, AIA and Tracy Camuso, AICP from G70

Future seminars will take us through the bidding process from the contractors point of view, and finally understanding the construction process from all sides and how the drawings aren’t ever done until after construction is complete.

Members of the AIA and GCA (General Contractors Association of Hawaii) meet to explore ideas and exchange information on topics of mutual interest. These brown bag meetings are open to all interested members of both organizations.
