In Remembrance

Aloha Dr. Alfred ‘BRUCE’ Etherington, FAIA, FRAIC, Arch, D., Ph.D. (1925-2016)

By Andrew Yanoviak, AIA-ME: As most University of Hawaii School of Architecture Alumni Association (UHSAAA), AIA Honolulu members and former UH Manoa, as well as visiting U.S. and foreign enrolled students and faculty know, ‘Bruce’ was revered by many and adored by some as a “professorial ‘humble’ proverbial student”. His close collegiate friends recognized that he was continuously ardently searching for universal truths in the cross-disciplinary ‘body of knowledge’ related to human habitats within the vast contextual realm of environmental systems planning and design.

Photo: Dr. A. ‘Bruce’ Etherington, FAIA, FRAIC, Ph.D. being Honored with his Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Fellow’s Medal in 2010. Courtesy of UHSAAA.

He had an especially focused exemplary conceptual goal; i.e., to strategically and tactically simplify perceived complex problems in a “less-is-MORE!” greater humanitarian synergetic outreach manner utilizing community and city planning theories, applied research methodologies and innovative technologies. ‘Bruce’ relinquished his Earthly duties and responsibilities peacefully at Queen’s Hospital on Friday 15 January – about two weeks after his immediate family fulfilled his last visionary request; i.e., “to visit the beach!” (
Dr. A. ‘Bruce’ Etherington, FAIA was the last recipient of the AIA Honolulu “Gordon W. Bradley Humanitarian Award” in 2003 for his extraordinary voluntary heartfelt scholarly and pragmatic professional response to unacceptable substandard ‘makeshift’ squatter ‘slum’ housing environments in Asia, where he applied his emerging inventive “Lok-Build” self-help design-build system. In Bangkok, Thailand ‘Bruce’s wife ‘Eiko’ “experienced firsthand” the “Lok-Build” system achieving a total of nine stories in height that has safely withstood severe earthquakes and hurricanes that were very successfully laterally resisted by prefabricated precast concrete structural members and integrated reinforcing steel connections.  Read the full write up by Andrew Yanoviak, AIA-ME.

Jan. 25, 6pm: Attend a UHSoA Lecture Honoring A. Bruce Etherington, FAIA.
Please join tonight for a lecture with Martin Felsen, UrbanLab, Chicago and brief presentation honoring the late A. Bruce Etherington, Chair for the Study of Human Natural Systems. Reception following. View Flyer (PDF).
