BRIK: New Resources for the New Year

The Building Research Information Knowledgebase (BRIK) provides access to research in all facets of the built environment. AIA members are eligible for substantially more full-text, abstracts, and citations via BRIK through a subscription to three EBSCO databases—Art & Architecture Complete, the Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals, and the Sustainability Reference Center.

Feb. 10 - Attend our 2016 Young Architects Forum (YAF) Kick-off!

RSVP Online Today!  Attend our Young Architects Forum (YAF) Kick-off on Wednesday, Feb. 10 from 5:30-7pm at the Ferraro Choi's offices,

This kick-off event will discuss our vision and goals for the year.  We’ll translate our shared vision and goals into a leadership structure and schedule of events for the year.  As a vision primer, YAF is generally about promoting leadership, mentorship, and fellowship.

Who should attend? Newly and recently licensed Architects (within ten years of licensure) are encouraged to attend.  Nearly licensed practitioners are also welcome.

Feb 18: AIA GMM Event: Social Justice, Equity and Diversity in the Workplace (1 CEU)

Program Overview: Developed by the International Living Future Institute, the JUST Program is a robust social justice transparency platform and disclosure tool. The JUST Program can be viewed as a "nutrition label" for socially responsible organizations, institutions and corporations. The JUST Label provides at-a-glance information about an organization's progress in key social justice categories such as diversity, equity, safety, employee benefit, local benefit and community stewardship. The speaker is Francis Janes, Social Justice Program Manager of the International Living Future Institute.

Feb 20: Architectural Walking Tour with Frank Haines, FAIA

Haven't attended one of our regular Architectural Walking Tours with Frank Haines, FAIA? Wait no longer! Frank has done this tour for over 50 years but at age 94 we are not sure how much longer he wants to keep going.This is a rare architectural treat that should not be missed!

Feb 23: Site Planning and Design Exam Review

  • 5:30pm-6:00pm: Check In | Socialize (Remote users need to login/trouble shoot)
  • 6:00pm-6:20pm: Jason Takeuchi, Assoc. AIA, will provide a series of ARE vignette strategies that can be applied to all of the exams.
  • 6:20-7:00pm: Elyse Takashige, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, will cover the content in the multiple choice section of the SPD exam
  • 7:00-7:20pm: Chretien Macutay, AIA, D.Arch will present strategies and approaches to the Site Grading and Site Design Vignettes which are associated with the SPD exam.

Upcoming ARE Prep Session:

Cost: Register in advance to receive the lower fee of $10 for AIA/AIAS members and $20 for non-members. Walk-in rates are $15 for AIA/AIAS members and $25 for non-members.

Feb. 25: Kick Off Pau Hana - 2016 AIA Mentorship Program (Assoc. AIA & AIAS)

Register Online! AIA Honolulu is pleased to announce the first annual 2016 AIA Mentorship Program. 

We invite Associate AIA, AIAS and architecture students to participate in a brand new mentorship program geared towards the professional development of emerging architects. View Flyer.

Where? Center for Architecture Thursday, Feb. 25, 5:30-7:30pm.

The Program

  • A formal platform and social group for future architects to engage with industry leaders with diverse backgrounds and perspectives
  • Meet new mentors every other month in small group sessions
  • Open to 30 participants, limited to students and Associate AIA members
  • Participants will be broken into five learning groups and will meet in casual pau hana setting

Kick-Off Pau Hana: The program will begin with a Kick-Off Pau Hana, which will be an informal gathering to introduce the program and allow participants to meet the mentors and their learning groups. All participants are strongly encouraged to attend the kick-off pau hana (registration limited to first 30 participants and includes beverages and pupus). Cost: $25/Student or AIAS and $50/Associate AIA Member (includes admission to Pau Hana Kickoff and five group mentoring sessions.)

Deadline Extended! Call for entries: 2016 KUKULU HALE AWARDS!

NAIOP Hawaii’s annual recognition of projects and people in the state’s commercial real estate industry

NAIOP Hawaii is now accepting entries for the 2016 Kukulu Hale Awards, recognizing excellence in Hawaii’s commercial real estate industry. New projects or renovations, including “green” buildings and projects completed for the public and nonprofit sectors are eligible if completed in Hawaii between January 31, 2013 and January 31, 2016. Nominations may be submitted by any person or entity affiliated with the project.

Important dates:

  • Call for Entry: Anytime as long as you can complete submittal folder by March 1
  • Tuesday, March 1, 2016: Entry portfolios due
  • Friday, May 6, 2016: Awards announced at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel
