Happy Labor Day

AIA Honolulu wishes you a safe and happy Labor Day!

HOLIDAY OFFICE HOURS: Both AIA Honolulu and AIA National offices will be closing at 3pm today, Friday, Aug. 29 (national closes 9am HI).  The offices will remain closed on Monday and they will re-open for normal business hours on Tuesday, Sept. 2 at 8am. Have a great 3-day weekend!

View 2014 AIA Honolulu Design Awards Pictures - Are You In Them?

We have now posted the pictures from our 2014 AIA Honolulu Design Awards Gala Celebration on the AIA Honolulu Facbook page. Take a look and see if you can spot yourself or someone you know. While one the page make sure you "like" and "follow" us as we often announce events/programs and add articles of interest on this site.

A big MAHALO goes out to our fabulous photographer Doug Blagriff, Hon. Affiliate. He got some great images this year, proving once for all, that we have some nice looking members and guests. Enjoy!

On our AIA Honolulu Facebook page we also added images from our first ever "Cocktail Napkin Sketch Contest" that took place during the gala dinner.

There is no surprise that we got some nice and funny entries. Thanks for being good sports and "playing along".  This will become an annual contest and we look forward to see what next year will bring.

AIA Honolulu Annual Business Meeting!  The AIA Honolulu Annual Business Meeting and lunch takes place, in conjunction with the Expo from 11:15am-1:00pm. Come meet and vote for our 2015 AIA Honolulu Board Nominees. You will also hear the treasurer's and presidents report. Annual business meeting information packages will be mailed out in the end of September.

Sep. 3 - Your Input Needed on 2012 (IRC) Codes

RSVP online for September 3: The State Building Code Council (SBCC) is mandated by the State Legislature to review the new model building codes every three years and to adopt a new model code for the state no less frequently than every six years. 

Since the changes between the ’06 ICC Series and the ’09 codes were small, the SBCC decided to skip the ’09 codes and move directly to the ’12 codes.  The State Building Code Council has designated AIA to gather input from the local professionals on any changes to the ’12 IRC codes that are needed.

Sep. 4 – Attend COTE Event "Ted Talks Sustainability"

RSVP Online! On Thursday, Sep. 4 from 12pm-1pm at the Center for Architecture the  AIA Honolulu COTE Committee presents "Ted Talks Sustainability!", open to all interested AIA Honolulu members and non-members.

Join us in watching 2-3 interesting and engaging Ted Talks on concepts & implementation of global design and sustainability to help quench your thirst for knowledge and optimism. We could tel you what they are but then that’d spoil it!  Breezway Hawaii will be graciously providing JJ Dolan’s pizza for all!  Come as you are and relax for an hour.

Sep 5 - Attend First Fridays "Honolulu Rail Transit Project Update"

Sep. 16 - Intro. to Electric Vehicles / Home & Commercial ESVE (1 HSW)

Tuesday, Sep. 16 from 12pm - 1pm at the Center for Architecture.  Did you know that Honolulu already requires electric charging stations in new public parking facilities?  You might be wondering “how many” and “how much”. Join COTE for a presentation by DBEDT and the non-profit group EV Structure which is helping to facilitate electric vehicle use and infrastructure throughout Hawaii. Learn about the electric vehicles available in Hawaii, the electricity needed to fuel an EV, mile ranges, EV Structure, costing, and installing applications. 

 The speaker is Todd Ritter, EVSE Specialist/Certified Energy Auditor (C.G.B.P.) with Retro-Fit Hawai'i ESSCO.  This event qualifies for 1 AIA/CES LU (HSW).

The cost is $10 for AIA Honolulu members and $20 for non-members.  Bring your lunch and beverage.

Peter Gommers, Allied with Shoji Hawaii LLC has created a lovely collection of Japanese style sliding shoji screens, doors and room dividers. Sep 5 - 2006 IRC Fundamentals Building Provisions Training (6.5 HSW)

You are invited to the upcoming 2006 IRC training on Friday, September 5, 2014 from 8:15am-3:45pm at the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, Kamuela, Hawaii. This training qualifies for 6.5 HSW. AIA Honolulu is the registered provider.

In this training, participants are introduced to the International Residential Code (IRC) This training provides a readily understandable explanation of the intent and overview of the requirements of residential code in general and the Prescriptive Provisions in particular. The instructor is John Farinelli, CBO, MCP, CFM, LEED AP and the cots is $50 incl. workbook. Registration deadline is Aug. 20. View event flyer with registration information (PDF).

Wind Design Provisions of the Hawaii State Building Code Training (4 HSW)

The Hawaii Coastal Zone Management Program of the Office of Planning invites your attendance at the Wind Design Provisions of the Hawaii State Building Code Training.  The training provides understandable explanations of the intent and overview of the Hawaii special wind region’s requirements for wind design, as incorporated in the Hawaii State Building Code and county amendments. Learn from the developer of the wind design provisions and obtain a copy of the International Code Council guidebook. This training qualifies for 4 HSW and AIA Honolulu is the registered provider. This is a free event with limited registration.

AIA Honolulu is a full service distributor of AIA Contract Documents and you can purchase all available documents in our online store.  AIA members sign in with your username and password to receive member discount.You can also view our order form and email or fax it to us.
