SUMMARY:Architecture Month: Big Island Architectural Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Architectural Walking Tour of Hawai’i Preparatory Academy\n	Saturday\, October 18 with tours from 9AM – 12PM\nJoin us for AIA Honolulu’s annual Architectural Walking Tour\, this year hosted at the beautiful Hawai’i Preparatory Academy campus in Waimea. \n \n	Explore the site’s award-winning architecture\, learn about its design evolution\, and hear firsthand from local architects and planners about the integration of landscape\, climate\, and education. \nA rare opportunity to experience one of Hawai’i’s most thoughtfully designed campuses through an architect’s lens. \n	In 1958\, the Hawaii Preparatory Academy Board of Trustees commissioned Vladimir Ossipoff\, a renowned mid-century architect\, to design a school campus. Today\, HPA possesses the largest single collection of Ossipoff’s work in one place. As the school modernizes and enacts an ambitious sustainability plan\, Ossipoff’s philosophy and influence remain. The campus as a whole received an AIA Hawaii Honor Award in 1970\, and the Energy Lab received an AIA Hawaii Award of Excellence in 2010. \nStaggered Tours: On Saturday\, October 18th\, staggered tours leave from the check-in point every 15 minutes from 9am-10am. Each docent will lead up to 12 participants. \nADA Disclaimer: The walking tour route is fairly lengthy and features some uneven terrain and large elevation changes. If someone in your party has limitations\, please let us know. \nStart & Check-In:  Stay tuned for information. \nA map will be provided to all registered attendees ahead of the event. \nThe tour takes about 2 hours but due to a larger number of walkers\, we appreciate your patience & flexibility if our estimated tour length is not exactly as scheduled. \nWhat You Need to Bring: Water bottle and snacks to keep up your energy; Comfortable shoes; Sunscreen and hats are highly recommended and Umbrella (depending on weather). \nAIA/CES LU: This tour qualifies for 2 AIA/CES LU. SUMMARY:LIVED IN" Exhibition Opening
DESCRIPTION:What happens when a home is treated not as a static structure\, but as something that is alive\, that grows\, adapts\, and responds to its surroundings? \nJoin us for an exhibition opening reception and experience how great design continues to thrive when it’s truly LIVED IN. \n“LIVED IN” is a visual journey through a series of Hawai’i homes. These homes weren’t frozen in the past. Like plants\, they’ve been nurtured and adapted\, rooted in original design yet shaped by climate\, culture\, and care. \nThe Scudder / Gillmar House was originally designed by visionary architect Alfred Preis and lovingly evolved and transformed over time by those who lived in it. The owner moved it\, piece by piece\, from Waikīkī to a nearby valley\, keeping its spirit alive while adapting to a new environment. It’s not just about good design\, it’s about the lasting relationship between people\, place\, and architecture. \nWHEN: Monday August 4\, 6pm – 7pm\nWHERE: Center for Architecture\, 828 Fort Street Mall\, Suite 100\nLight refreshments will be served. \nEXHIBITION: Exhibition runs through August 31\, 2025 \n \n	Photo Credits:\nDavid Franzen  (upper Image)\nOwner (lower image)

SUMMARY:Micro Expression Exhibition of Photography Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening celebrating the opening of a striking new photography exhibit by Nihm Do Soo\, the artistic pseudonym of our friend and colleague\, Professor David Rockwood.\nThis special reception marks the public debut of his new body of work and creative identity. Through the lens of Nihm Do Soo\, familiar landscapes and moments are transformed into poetic reflections on time\, place\, and perception.\nFriday\, July 116pm – 7:30pmCenter for Architecture\, 828 Fort Street Mall\, Suite 100\nLight refreshments will be served. We hope you can join us for this meaningful unveiling and conversation with the artist!\n \n	Artist’s Statement:\nThis exhibition gathers 30 photographs – 15 from Da Nang\, Vietnam\, and 15 from Honolulu – two cities I’ve called home.  These images search for something beneath the surface: the quiet gestures and fleeting encounters that shape a place more deeply than maps or master plans. Churchill once said\, “We shape our buildings; thereafter\, they shape us.” \nBut perhaps the shaping begins even earlier. Cities don’t arise only from blueprints or grids – they emerge from accumulated emotions\, daily movements\, and shared dreams. \n	What if we saw the city not as something built from the top down\, but carved from the inside out\, like a tunnel through solid space? Ants\, moles\, and we ourselves mark our territory with repetition and need. \nAs an architect and urbanist\, I was trained to look from above – to impose order\, analyze form\, map density. But the life of a city pulses at ground level\, in the smallest acts: a glance\, a step\, a pause in the shade. These are the micro expressions I try to see with the camera – part observation\, part reflection\, part offering. \nDa Nang and Honolulu each speak with their own accent\, shaped by history\, climate\, and culture. Yet both reveal\, in their fragments\, something universal. These images are incomplete\, of course – no city can be captured whole. But perhaps\, in their quiet details\, they hint at how we shape place – and how it shapes us in return.
