SUMMARY:AIA Book Club: Human Transit
DESCRIPTION:Designing Conversations:\nAIA Hawai’i Book Club (2 HSWs)\nEach quarter\, we’ll gather around a book tangential to architecture-think design\, culture\, place\, history\, climate\, or the forces that shape the built environment in unexpected ways. The event features a compelling guest speaker who will draw out the book’s big ideas and connect them to practice in Hawaiʻi\, all hosted at a cool\, thoughtfully chosen venue. \nWhether you’ve read every page\, skimmed the introduction\, or are just coming for the conversation\, the AIA Hawaiʻi Book Club is about shared curiosity and expanding how we think about our work and our world. \n\n Book Club Q2: Human Transit	\n	For our second Book Club\, we have chosen “Human Transit: How clearer thinking about public transit can enrich our communities and our lives.” by Jarrett Walker. \nTransportation expert Jarrett Walker believes that transit can be simple\, if we focus on the underlying geometry that all transit systems share. \n\n \n	\n	Suddenly\, public transit is a critical issue. For decades\, the private car has seemed the ideal tool for free and spontaneous travel\, and in rural areas and many small towns\, that will continue to be true. But all over the world\, people are moving into cities\, and great cities just don’t have room for everyone’s car. Meanwhile\, the converging threats of climate change and the end of cheap oil are forcing a new assessment of how cities work. Public transit-the most efficient mode for moving large numbers of people long distances across cities-is an essential tool in that effort. \n	Where to get the book? You can find the book at your local library\, bookstore or online. \nGood News: You do NOT have to read the book to attend. Join us for an engaging conversation designed for anyone curious about architecture and its broader context. \n\n \n	\n	The discussion will be led by Jon Nouchi\, Director of Transit\, who focuses on advancing Honolulu’s multimodal transit system\, including Skyline\, TheBus\, Handi-Van\, and Biki. \nNouchi brings nearly 30 years of transportation experience in Hawaiʻi. In his new role\, he will oversee transit planning\, operations\, and system integration as Skyline continues to expand as a core part of the island’s transportation network. \n	When: June 27 from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM\nWhere: UH West Oahu\, Center for Creative Media\nCEU: This session qualifies for 2 AIA/CES (HSW)\nCost: Free\nParking: Free\n\n Taking the Skyline	\n \n Park-and-Ride\n \n \n How to Ride Skyline\n \n \n Fares\n \n \n Google Maps Route\n \n\n \n	\n\n \n	\n	\n \n \n RSVP for Book Club #2\n \n "*" indicates required fields \n \n Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n AIA DesignationAIAAssoc. SUMMARY:Chair Yoga with Diane Ako
DESCRIPTION:Chair Yoga: Stretch\, Reset & Recharge	\n	In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month\, AIA Honolulu’s Equity\, Diversity\, and Inclusion Committee invites you to take a well-deserved pause with a free 30-minute virtual Chair Yoga session led by Diane Ako. \nArchitects and design professionals spend countless hours at our desks\, in front of computer screens\, and managing demanding schedules. This gentle chair yoga session is designed to help release tension\, improve posture and mobility\, reduce stress\, and provide a moment to reset-both physically and mentally. No prior yoga experience is necessary\, and all movements can be done from the comfort of your office or home using a standard chair. \nWhether you need a midday stretch or simply want to prioritize your wellbeing\, we hope you’ll join us for this relaxing and accessible session. \n\n \n	\n	Registration is required to receive the Zoom link. There is no cost to attend. \nSession Details\n\nFormat: Virtual (Zoom)\nDuration: 30 minutes\nCost: Free\n\nFor chair yoga\, please come in comfortable clothes that allow you to bend over or stretch sideways. Pants (not skirts) for women\, and hair ties\, are a good idea. If you have the space and ability to stand at your desk\, I will also offer that option\, so please bring your yoga mat. If you are using a yoga mat\, then you probably know yoga is done without shoes or socks\, so be ready to take those off. \n	About the Instructor \nDiane Ako (RYT-200) teaches hatha yoga and chair yoga. She was certified in 2018 and started her yoga career teaching senior citizens at a senior center in 2020. Those senior facilities were closed during the coronavirus pandemic\, but Diane continued sharing the healing benefits of yoga by volunteering to teach essential workers at a restaurant (outside\, after hours)\, and forming a Yard Yoga group with her next door neighbors. In 2022\, Yoga Under The Palms hired her as an instructor for beginner and intermediate classes. Additionally\, in 2025 she started offering weekly lunch-break chair yoga classes to her coworkers at the state\, where her primary job is. \n\n \n	\n	Diane’s classes are gentle\, with a focus on clear\, accessible instruction. Her classes are designed for beginners\, with an emphasis on building confidence and proper alignment. She can easily accommodate intermediate students who want a deeper challenge. Her goal is to help every student feel grounded\, supported\, and connected in their practice. \nAko is a Native Hawaiian woman who values public service and giving back to her community. She is a single mother of one biological child\, a foster daughter\, and two cats. In her spare time she teaches yoga\, makes independent films\, and keeps hoping she’ll one day nail that Tittibhasana (firefly) pose. \n	\n \n \n RSVP for Chair Yoga: Stretch\, Reset & Recharge\n \n \n Name(Required)\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n AIA DesignationNon-memberAIAAssoc. SUMMARY:AIA Book Club: What If We Get It Right
DESCRIPTION:Designing Conversations:\nAIA Hawai’i Book Club (2 HSWs)\nEach quarter\, we’ll gather around a book tangential to architecture-think design\, culture\, place\, history\, climate\, or the forces that shape the built environment in unexpected ways. \n	Book Club Q3: At Hawaii Nature Center’s Rain Shelter!\nFor our third Book Club\, we have chosen “What If We Get It Right: Visions of Climate Futures” by Ayana Elizabeth Johnson. \nA SMITHSONIAN BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR! Sometimes\, the bravest thing we can do when facing an existential crisis is to imagine life on the other side. This provocative and joyous book maps an inspiring landscape of possible climate futures. \n\n \n	\n	Through clear-eyed essays and vibrant conversations\, infused with data\, poetry\, and art\, Ayana guides us through solutions and possibilities at the nexus of science\, policy\, culture\, and justice. Visionary farmers and financiers\, architects and advocates\, help us conjure a flourishing future\, one worth the effort it will take-from every one of us\, with whatever we have to offer-to create. \nWith grace\, humor\, and humanity\, Johnson invites readers to ask and answer this ultimate question together: What if we get it right? \n\n \n	\n	Where to get the book? You can find the book at your local library\, bookstore or online. \nGood News: You do NOT have to read the book to attend. Join us for an engaging conversation designed for anyone curious about architecture and its broader context. \n	Moderated by Kirsten Oleson\, Professor of Ecological Economics at UH Manoa.\nRead bio.\n	We plan to use the “Reading Guide” provided by the author\, with an emphasis on the If We Build It section. \n	When: September 26\, 2026\nfrom 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM\nWhere: Hawaii Nature Center’s Rain Shelter\, 2131 Makiki Heights Drive\, Honolulu\, HI 96822\nCEU: This session qualifies for 2 AIA/CES (HSW)\nMax: 30 attendees\nCost: Free\nParking: Free\nPlease bring your own lawn chair(s). \n\n \n	\n	\n \n \n RSVP for Book Club #3\n \n "*" indicates required fields \n \n Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n AIA DesignationAIAAssoc.
