SUMMARY:AIA Book Club: Nature Behind Barbed Wire
DESCRIPTION:Designing Conversations:AIA Hawai’i Book Club\nEach quarter\, we’ll gather around a book tangential to architecture-think design\, culture\, place\, history\, climate\, or the forces that shape the built environment in unexpected ways. The event features a compelling guest speaker who will draw out the book’s big ideas and connect them to practice in Hawaiʻi\, all hosted at a cool\, thoughtfully chosen venue. \nWhether you’ve read every page\, skimmed the introduction\, or are just coming for the conversation\, the AIA Hawaiʻi Book Club is about shared curiosity and expanding how we think about our work and our world. \nBook Club #1: At the Hawaii Plantation Village Mar 28!\n \nFor our first Book Club\, we have chosen “Nature Behind Barbed Wire: An Environmental History of the Japanese American Incarceration” by Connie Chang. \nCopies of the book are available at the Center for Architecture for $25\, or via Amazon/the publisher. \nGood News: You do NOT have to read the book to attend. Join us for an engaging conversation designed for anyone curious about architecture and its broader context. \n\nOur first featured guest speaker will be Christine Ogura\, NPS Superintendent for the Honouliuli National Historic Site. \nOgura has worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for 14 years. She worked for the late U.S. Congresswoman Patsy T. Mink and for non-profits acquiring lands for the NPS and supported international conservation efforts in more than 10 countries. SUMMARY:AIA Book Club: Human Transit
DESCRIPTION:Designing Conversations:\nAIA Hawai’i Book Club (2 HSWs)\nEach quarter\, we’ll gather around a book tangential to architecture-think design\, culture\, place\, history\, climate\, or the forces that shape the built environment in unexpected ways. \n\n Book Club Q2: Human Transit	\n	For our second Book Club\, we have chosen “Human Transit: How clearer thinking about public transit can enrich our communities and our lives.” by Jarrett Walker. \nTransportation expert Jarrett Walker believes that transit can be simple\, if we focus on the underlying geometry that all transit systems share. \n\n \n	\n	Suddenly\, public transit is a critical issue. For decades\, the private car has seemed the ideal tool for free and spontaneous travel\, and in rural areas and many small towns\, that will continue to be true. But all over the world\, people are moving into cities\, and great cities just don’t have room for everyone’s car. Meanwhile\, the converging threats of climate change and the end of cheap oil are forcing a new assessment of how cities work. Public transit-the most efficient mode for moving large numbers of people long distances across cities-is an essential tool in that effort. \n	Where to get the book? You can find the book at your local library\, bookstore or online. \nGood News: You do NOT have to read the book to attend. Join us for an engaging conversation designed for anyone curious about architecture and its broader context. \n\n \n	\n	The discussion will be led by Jon Nouchi\, Director of Transit\, who focuses on advancing Honolulu’s multimodal transit system\, including Skyline\, TheBus\, Handi-Van\, and Biki. \nNouchi brings nearly 30 years of transportation experience in Hawaiʻi. In his new role\, he will oversee transit planning\, operations\, and system integration as Skyline continues to expand as a core part of the island’s transportation network. \n	When: June 27 from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM\nWhere: UH West Oahu\, Center for Creative Media\nCEU: This session qualifies for 2 AIA/CES (HSW)\nCost: Free\nParking: Free\n\n Taking the Skyline	\n \n Park-and-Ride\n \n \n How to Ride Skyline\n \n \n Fares\n \n \n Google Maps Route\n \n\n \n	\n\n \n	\n	\n \n \n RSVP for Book Club #2\n \n "*" indicates required fields \n \n Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n AIA DesignationAIAAssoc. SUMMARY:Chair Yoga with Diane Ako
DESCRIPTION:Chair Yoga: Stretch\, Reset & Recharge	\n	In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month\, AIA Honolulu’s Equity\, Diversity\, and Inclusion Committee invites you to take a well-deserved pause with a free 30-minute virtual Chair Yoga session led by Diane Ako. \nArchitects and design professionals spend countless hours at our desks\, in front of computer screens\, and managing demanding schedules. This gentle chair yoga session is designed to help release tension\, improve posture and mobility\, reduce stress\, and provide a moment to reset-both physically and mentally. No prior yoga experience is necessary\, and all movements can be done from the comfort of your office or home using a standard chair. \nWhether you need a midday stretch or simply want to prioritize your wellbeing\, we hope you’ll join us for this relaxing and accessible session. \n\n \n	\n	Registration is required to receive the Zoom link. There is no cost to attend. \nSession Details\n\nFormat: Virtual (Zoom)\nDuration: 30 minutes\nCost: Free\n\nFor chair yoga\, please come in comfortable clothes that allow you to bend over or stretch sideways. Pants (not skirts) for women\, and hair ties\, are a good idea. If you have the space and ability to stand at your desk\, I will also offer that option\, so please bring your yoga mat. If you are using a yoga mat\, then you probably know yoga is done without shoes or socks\, so be ready to take those off. \n	About the Instructor \nDiane Ako (RYT-200) teaches hatha yoga and chair yoga. She was certified in 2018 and started her yoga career teaching senior citizens at a senior center in 2020. Those senior facilities were closed during the coronavirus pandemic\, but Diane continued sharing the healing benefits of yoga by volunteering to teach essential workers at a restaurant (outside\, after hours)\, and forming a Yard Yoga group with her next door neighbors. In 2022\, Yoga Under The Palms hired her as an instructor for beginner and intermediate classes. Additionally\, in 2025 she started offering weekly lunch-break chair yoga classes to her coworkers at the state\, where her primary job is. \n\n \n	\n	Diane’s classes are gentle\, with a focus on clear\, accessible instruction. Her classes are designed for beginners\, with an emphasis on building confidence and proper alignment. She can easily accommodate intermediate students who want a deeper challenge. Her goal is to help every student feel grounded\, supported\, and connected in their practice. \nAko is a Native Hawaiian woman who values public service and giving back to her community. She is a single mother of one biological child\, a foster daughter\, and two cats. In her spare time she teaches yoga\, makes independent films\, and keeps hoping she’ll one day nail that Tittibhasana (firefly) pose. \n	\n \n \n RSVP for Chair Yoga: Stretch\, Reset & Recharge\n \n \n Name(Required)\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n AIA DesignationNon-memberAIAAssoc. SUMMARY:AIA Book Club: Intellectual Anarchy
DESCRIPTION:Designing Conversations:\nAIA Hawai’i Book Club\nEach quarter\, we’ll gather around a book tangential to architecture-think design\, culture\, place\, history\, climate\, or the forces that shape the built environment in unexpected ways. \n	Book Club Q4: AIA Honolulu Center for Architecture!\nFor our fourth Book Club\, we have chosen “Intellectual Anarchy” by Dr. Patrick Sullivan\, CEO of Oceanit. \nIntellectual Anarchy:\nArchitecture and the Future of Design (2 HSW)\nHow will emerging technologies\, new materials and unconventional methods reshape the future of architecture? \nArtificial Intelligence is impacting the world of “deep tech\,” which is enabling new science\, engineering and design.  Advances in technology\, materials science\, artificial intelligence\, engineering\, fabrication and construction are opening possibilities that would have been difficult to imagine only a generation ago. \n\n \n	\n	Intellectual Anarchy explores how we can approach difficult problems by challenging conventional thinking and looking for disruptive solutions rather than incremental improvements. Developed at Oceanit\, the Intellectual Anarchy discipline encourages ideas that may initially seem to come “out of left field”-ideas capable of overturning established practices\, industries and business models. \n	For this conversation\, author Dr. Patrick Sullivan will bring that thinking directly into the world of architecture. \nDrawing on examples from emerging technologies\, engineering and materials science\, Dr. Sullivan will explore how innovation could create entirely new opportunities for architects and designers-from new methods and materials to new ways of creating spaces\, structures and human experiences. \nThe discussion will challenge us to think beyond how architecture is practiced today and ask bigger questions: \n\nWhat will become possible that isn’t possible today?\nHow will technology change what-and how-we design?\nWhat new materials and methods could transform the built environment?\nAnd what role will architects play as the boundaries between design\, technology\, engineering and science continue to blur?\n\n	Where to get the book? You can find the book online here. \nGood News: You do NOT have to read the book to attend. This is an engaging\, forward-looking conversation for anyone curious about where architecture is headed and how emerging technology could redefine the profession. \nOur moderator/presenter will be the author\, Dr. Sullivan. \n\n \n	\n	About Dr. Patrick Sullivan:\nDr. Patrick Sullivan is a scientist\, engineer\, technologist\, entrepreneur\, businessman\, public speaker and futurist. He founded Oceanit in 1985 and developed its Intellectual Anarchy approach to disruptive innovation. He has launched numerous private-equity-financed start-ups and spin-out companies and has spent decades working at the intersection of science\, technology\, engineering and innovation.\n	In 2016\, Hawaii Business Magazine named him CEO of the Year\, and in 2019\, Pacific Business News named him a Titan of Technology. \nWhen: October 13\, 2026 from 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM\nWhere: AIA Honolulu Center for Architecture\, 828 Fort Street Mall\, Suite 100\, Honolulu\, HI 96813\nAIA/CES: Qualifies for 2 AIA/CES LUs (HSW)\nCost: Free\nParking: Visit this link for directions to our Center for Architecture\, as well as parking suggestions.\n(We recommend the Harbor Court building next door\, as the Oceanit parking lot has limited guest parking) \n\n \n \n RSVP for Book Club #4\n \n "*" indicates required fields \n \n Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n AIA DesignationAIAAssoc. While the treasure may be the goal\, the journey sparks encounters with vivid characters and rarely seen buildings that reveal the story of Bawa’s life and legacy. \nShot across Sri Lanka\, this experimental docudrama blends dreamlike narrative with real people and places intrinsic to Bawa’s world. Eclectic and quietly moving\, the film echoes the spirit of Bawa’s architecture-and the collaborators who helped shape it. \nEclectic and quietly moving\, the film echoes the spirit of Bawa’s architecture-and the collaborators who helped shape it. \n \n View Trailer Here\n \n	Panelists and Moderator for Discussion: \n\n \n	\n	Simon Bussiere\, Associate Professor and Academic Director\nUniversity of Hawai’i at Mānoa\nClick here to read bio.\n\n \n	\n	Kaili Chun\, Artist\nKanaka Maoli sculptor and installation artist\nClick here to read bio.\n\n \n	\n	Geoffrey Lewis\, AIA\,\nGeoffrey Lewis Architect\, Inc.\nClick here to read bio.\n\n \n	\n	Moderator: Catherine Cruz\, Host\nHawaiʻi Public Radio\nClick here to read bio.\n	\n \n \n RSVP for 2026 Oahu Film Night\n \n \n Name(Required)\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n AIA DesignationNon-memberAIAAssoc.
