SUMMARY:2026 PBX Hawaii
DESCRIPTION:Designing Conversations:\nAIA Hawai‘i Book Club\nEach quarter\, we’ll gather around a book tangential to architecture—think design\, culture\, place\, history\, climate\, or the forces that shape the built environment in unexpected ways. The event features a compelling guest speaker who will draw out the book’s big ideas and connect them to practice in Hawaiʻi\, all hosted at a cool\, thoughtfully chosen venue. \nWhether you’ve read every page\, skimmed the introduction\, or are just coming for the conversation\, the AIA Hawaiʻi Book Club is about shared curiosity and expanding how we think about our work and our world. \n\n\n	\n\n\n	Book Club Q4: AIA Honolulu Center for Architecture!\nFor our fourth Book Club\, we have chosen “Intellectual Anarchy" by Dr. Patrick Sullivan\, CEO of Oceanit. \nIntellectual Anarchy: Architecture and the Future of Design\nHow will emerging technologies\, new materials and unconventional methods reshape the future of architecture? \nArtificial Intelligence is impacting the world of “deep tech\,” which is enabling new science\, engineering and design.  Advances in technology\, materials science\, artificial intelligence\, engineering\, fabrication and construction are opening possibilities that would have been difficult to imagine only a generation ago. \n\n\n\n \n	\n	\n \n \n	\n\n\n \n	\n	Intellectual Anarchy explores how we can approach difficult problems by challenging conventional thinking and looking for disruptive solutions rather than incremental improvements. Developed at Oceanit\, the Intellectual Anarchy discipline encourages ideas that may initially seem to come “out of left field”—ideas capable of overturning established practices\, industries and business models. \n\n\n\n	\n\n	For this conversation\, author Dr. Patrick Sullivan will bring that thinking directly into the world of architecture. \nDrawing on examples from emerging technologies\, engineering and materials science\, Dr. Sullivan will explore how innovation could create entirely new opportunities for architects and designers—from new methods and materials to new ways of creating spaces\, structures and human experiences. \nThe discussion will challenge us to think beyond how architecture is practiced today and ask bigger questions: \n\nWhat will become possible that isn’t possible today?\nHow will technology change what—and how—we design?\nWhat new materials and methods could transform the built environment?\nAnd what role will architects play as the boundaries between design\, technology\, engineering and science continue to blur?\n\n\n\n	Where to get the book? You can find the book online here. \nGood News: You do NOT have to read the book to attend. This is an engaging\, forward-looking conversation for anyone curious about where architecture is headed and how emerging technology could redefine the profession. \nOur moderator/presenter will be the author\, Dr. Sullivan. \n\n\n\n \n	\n	\n \n \n	\n\n\n \n	\n	About Dr. Patrick Sullivan:\nDr. Patrick Sullivan is a scientist\, engineer\, technologist\, entrepreneur\, businessman\, public speaker and futurist. He founded Oceanit in 1985 and developed its Intellectual Anarchy approach to disruptive innovation. He has launched numerous private-equity-financed start-ups and spin-out companies and has spent decades working at the intersection of science\, technology\, engineering and innovation. \n\n\n\n	\n\n	In 2016\, Hawaii Business Magazine named him CEO of the Year\, and in 2019\, Pacific Business News named him a Titan of Technology. \nWhen: October 13\, 2026 from 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM\nWhere: AIA Honolulu Center for Architecture\, 828 Fort Street Mall\, Suite 100\, Honolulu\, HI 96813\nCost: Free\nParking: Visit this link for directions to our Center for Architecture\, as well as parking suggestions. \n(We recommend the Harbor Court building next door\, as the Oceanit parking lot has limited guest parking) \n\n\n \n \n RSVP for Book Club #4\n \n "*" indicates required fields \n \n Name*\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n AIA DesignationAIAAssoc. SUMMARY:Blueprints for Leadership: Session #8
DESCRIPTION:Blueprints for Leadership: A Series of Workshops (2 LUs)	\n\n Empowering Architects at Every Stage of Their Career	\n\n \n	\n	Blueprints for Leadership is a dynamic series of workshops designed to help architects build essential skills in strategic thinking\, business acumen\, and effective management. Successful firms must build strong reputations\, develop meaningful client relationships\, identify opportunities\, and effectively communicate why clients should choose them. \nThis session will explore how branding\, marketing\, and business development work together to help architectural firms win work. Mark Tawara\, FSMPS\, CPSM\, and Jason Takeuchi\, AIA\, NCARB\, NOMA\, will share practical perspectives on how firms build awareness\, develop relationships\, pursue opportunities\, and turn successful projects into repeat clients and referrals. Participants will also examine what influences a client’s selection of an architect-from technical competence and experience to trust\, reputation\, relationships\, and communication. \nMost importantly\, participants will learn that marketing and business development aren’t limited to principals or marketing staff. Architects at every career stage contribute to their firm’s brand and future success through the quality of their work\, the relationships they build\, and the way they represent their firm. \nThings to be covered during this presentation: \n\nUnderstand the distinct but interconnected roles of branding\, marketing\, and business development in architectural practice.\nExplore how clients select architects and the tangible and intangible factors that influence their decisions.\nUnderstand the business development cycle\, from building awareness and relationships to identifying opportunities\, winning work\, delivering exceptional service\, and generating repeat business and referrals.\nIdentify practical ways architects can contribute to marketing and business development at any stage of their career\, even if they are not directly responsible for selling or pursuing work.\n\n\n Welcome Speakers	\n	Mark Tawara\, FSMPS\, CPSM\, Honorary Affiliate of AIA Honolulu \n\n \n	\n	Mark Tawara\, FSMPS\, CPSM\, is Principal and Co-Owner of Manageability\, a Hawaii-based management and marketing consulting firm serving organizations and businesses throughout the built environment.
