DESCRIPTION:The Architectural Walking Tour of Downtown Honolulu is a rare treat for local residents and visitors to explore the area through the eyes of an architect or architectural historian. Each tour provides architectural and historical insights about the fascinating buildings in Honolulu’s downtown and Capitol District. \nTour Groups: Tour groups must be between 4-14 people to take place. Advanced reservations are required.\nIf less than 4 people sign up\, the tour will be cancelled and a full refund will be issued to anyone already registered.\nTour Cost: $25.00/person paid online. Registration is generally open until 4PM Friday before the tour date\, unless the tour fills up early or is cancelled. Walk-in registrations are not allowed.\nTour availability is on a first come\, first served basis and may close earlier than the registration deadline!\nBooklet: A historic booklet can be purchased for $5.00 (optional). Purchase it online or on the day of the tour (cash only-exact change). Booklets can be added on in the virtual shopping cart before checkout. \nLocation & Parking: The tour will begin at AIA Honolulu’s Center for Architecture at the corner of Fort Street Mall and Queen Street. Parking at the Oceanit Building is currently closed during weekends\, however\, some street parking might be available. The Westbound Route 4 bus stops right outside of our Center\, and various other TheBus lines have stops within a 5 minute walk. DESCRIPTION:The Architectural Walking Tour of Downtown Honolulu is a rare treat for local residents and visitors to explore the area through the eyes of an architect or architectural historian. Each tour provides architectural and historical insights about the fascinating buildings in Honolulu’s downtown and Capitol District. \nTour Groups: Tour groups must be between 4-14 people to take place. Advanced reservations are required.\nIf less than 4 people sign up\, the tour will be cancelled and a full refund will be issued to anyone already registered.\nTour Cost: $25.00/person paid online. Registration is generally open until 4PM Friday before the tour date\, unless the tour fills up early or is cancelled. Walk-in registrations are not allowed.\nTour availability is on a first come\, first served basis and may close earlier than the registration deadline!\nBooklet: A historic booklet can be purchased for $5.00 (optional). Purchase it online or on the day of the tour (cash only-exact change). Booklets can be added on in the virtual shopping cart before checkout. \nLocation & Parking: The tour will begin at AIA Honolulu’s Center for Architecture at the corner of Fort Street Mall and Queen Street. Parking at the Oceanit Building is currently closed during weekends\, however\, some street parking might be available. The Westbound Route 4 bus stops right outside of our Center\, and various other TheBus lines have stops within a 5 minute walk. DESCRIPTION:McKinley High School Campus And Vicinity Walking Tour (1.5 LU)\n \nIn addition to our monthly Downtown and Chinatown Walking Tours\, AIA Honolulu shares a special Walking Tour annually in celebration of Architecture Month. \nThis year’s tour showcases the McKinley High School campus and surrounding area\, which includes several properties on the National Register of Historic Places\, including Thomas Square dating from the 19th century\, as well as buildings constructed between 1924 and 1939. \nMost of the walk is within the high school campus\, with some adjacent or nearby buildings and historic properties included. Docents will discuss the architects and landscape architects who designed the properties\, as well as the history and character they embody today. \nStaggered Tours: On Saturday\, October 19th\, staggered tours leave from the check-in point every 10 minutes from 8am-12pm.  Each docent will lead up to 12 participants. \nADA Disclaimer: The walking tour route has been selected to provide the maximum level of accessibility and safety possible in the area\, however\, risks do exist. Sidewalks are used wherever possible\, but a portion of the tour is over grass and ramps between sidewalks are not always available. \n \nStart & Check-In:  Makai side of the cafeteria\, at least 15 minutes before the scheduled tour time. \nThe last tour will be at 10:30am \nA map will be provided to all registered attendees ahead of the event. \nThe tour takes about 1.5 hours (less than 1 mile) but due to a larger number of walkers\, we appreciate your patience & flexibility if our estimated tour length is not exactly as scheduled. \nWhat You Need to Bring: Water bottle and snacks to keep up your energy; Comfortable shoes; Sunscreen and hats are highly recommended and Umbrella (depending on weather). \nAIA/CES LU: This tour qualifies for 1.5 AIA/CES LU. DESCRIPTION:Architecture Month: Photography Workshop with Olivier Koning\nIn Memory of Ted Garduque\, FAIA\, (1951-2022) whose passion for art and photography made this workshop successful for many years. \nSpend the day with a renowned photographer and learn strategies & techniques to capture successful photography. The workshop will include a lecture in the morning followed by a photoshoot at the beautiful Alexander & Baldwin lobby. \nWe will remain as a group so our photographer can share strategies and answer questions while out on assignment. After lunch\, the group will return to the CFA for afternoon crits and further discussion. \nAgenda: \n\n9am-10:30am: Attendees meet at the Center for Architecture for a discussion lead by Olivier about photography.\n10:30am-12pm: The group will walk over to the beautiful Alexander & Baldwin Lobby for a photoshoot session.\n12pm-1pm: Brown bag lunch and meet back at the Center for Architecture to eat and select 3-4 images for formal critique.\n1pm-3pm: Attendees will share their images with the group and receive critique and tips from our photographer.\n\nPhotographer: Honolulu-based photographer Olivier Koning has been a resident of Hawai’i for over 40 years and both attended the University of Hilo and Manoa. It is during his 10 years with the international architectural firm Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo that he developed a keen sense for architectural photography. He has been freelancing for the past 20 years. \nWhat to bring: Please bring your own camera (with ideally at least a wide-angle lens since the Lobby is a bit tight) or phone to take photos with\, as well as a tripod if you have one. We recommend bringing a laptop to upload your pictures. \nCost: $50 for AIA Members\, $75 for Non-Members and $40 for Students \nRegister: Payment and registration needed before the workshop.
