Free & Low-Cost Events Open to All

AIA Honolulu is celebrating its 14th Annual Architecture Month and we are pleased to offer free and low-cost activities for all during the month of April.

These annual events got started to highlight the power of good design in making our communities better places to live, work and play and also generate a discussion of design in Hawaii. We hope by elevating awareness of architecture, you will be inspired by your surroundings on a daily basis.

APRIL 2 - Free Architecture Month Launch: A Night of Design Presentations

APRIL 2 - Hawaii Public Radio Pledge Drive 6am-9am

Help support Quality Programming and the Arts in Hawaii

AIA Honolulu architects have participated in the Hawaii Public Radio pledge drive for many years and truly enjoy taking part in keeping quality programs and arts alive in Hawaii.  During our shift, AIA Honolulu architects answer the phones, take pledges and offer challenges.

APRIL 18 - Architectural Walking Tour in Kakaako

The public is invited to join in a Walking Tour of Kakaako, led by AIA member-architects, on Saturday, April 18 – a rare opportunity to explore the area’s rich history and future vision from a design perspective.  Over the course of two hours (about 1.5 miles), walkers will learn about architecturally significant historic and recent buildings and spaces in an area of urban Honolulu that has been the focus of so much attention in recent years. 

Docent-guided tours explore a general history of the vibrant Kakaako neighborhood focusing on urban living and affordable housing in this eclectic neighborhood next to downtown.

When:   Saturday, April 18, 8am-12pm (tours starts every 10 minutes between 8am until 10am)
Starting Point:  Check in at Mother Waldron Park, at the corner of Cook St & Pohukaina St.
End of Tour: The tour ends at SALT (different area than the start)
Cost:  $15/person supports AIA expenses. Advance payment and reservation required.

APRIL 18 - Free Urban Sketchers Oahu in Kakaako

No RSVP Required! USk O‘ahu and AIA Honolulu Announce Free Sketch Event

  • Meeting Point: Mother Waldron Park (Corner of Cook St. & Pohukaina St.)

Sketchers of all skill levels, this is for you! AIA Honolulu teams up with Urban Sketchers Oʻahu to visit Mother Waldron Park for a morning of sketching in any medium to chronicle Kaka’ako. We'll sketch for 1.5 hours and then gather for a show-and-tell social at 11:30 a.m. The goal of Urban Sketchers Oʻahu is to raise awareness, interest, and enthusiasm for sketching on location as a way to document local scenes, express oneself artistically, and make connections. Art is then shared online at the Urban Sketchers Oahu website via Flickr.

APRIL 19: Bank of Hawaii Family Sunday - Water

No RSVP Required!  Join AIA Honolulu on Bank of Hawaii Sunday at the Honolulu Museum of Art during Architecture Month celebrating the theme: Water.  Children of all ages will be introduced to the architectural and design experience while letting their imaginations run wild.  Stop by our table from 10am-2pm and visit with our wonderful volunteers who have planned a fun architectural related children activity.

Supplies will be provided, no advance registration required. There will also be volunteers on hand to assist and talk about the field of architecture.

APRIL 24 - Free Design "Firm Crawl" Open House

Learn more about architectural design, interior design, landscape design and meet the people shaping Hawaii’s built environment during this annual tradition that is open to the public.  On this evening you can visit several design firms in the central business district of downtown and adjacent areas during this open house: many locations include pupu and drinks! APRIL 25 - Photography Workshop

Register Online!

Titled:  Exploring Black & White Photography in a Color World

Spend the day with two renowned photographers and learn strategies & techniques to capture successful black & white photography.  The seminar will include a lecture in the morning followed by a photoshoot in the greater Honolulu Harbor vicinity.   We will remain as a group so the professionals can share strategies and answer questions while out on assignment.  After lunch, the group will return to the CFA for afternoon crits and further discussion.

Printed Image: Participants will receive one 16x20 image printed and mounted by Honblue, Inc.

Ideally required:  Digital Camera, laptop to download and review images, thumb drive to transfer images to CFA server. Lunch is not included.

Cost: $75 AIA Members, $105 Non-Members & $55 Students, includes light refreshments. Session limited to 12 participants.

APRIL 30 - Free Oahu Public Film Night

You are invited to watch a free film of interest to the design-minded.  The film will be followed by a panel discussion by AIA Honolulu member-architects on the issues that were raised by the filmmakers.

Film Title: The Human Shelter (56 minutes)

In a special collaboration, IKEA has funded award-winning documentary maker Boris Bertram’s latest project – “The Human Shelter: An Expedition Into What Makes A Home”. Currently touring the international film circuit.  The film will be followed by a panel discussion.

    April 11: Kona Young Architects Workshop "Tree+House"

    Contact Donkeymill Art Center to Pre-Register!  AIA Honolulu presents Tree+House, a workshop combining the ideas of building with and in nature with the human need for shelter. Students will work with architecture and art mentors to design and construct a model of a treehouse while learning design and exploring our relationship to nature and shelter.

    When:  Saturday, April 11, 10am-2:00pm (with lunch break)
