In 2020 AIA Honolulu will be celebrating its 14th Annual Architecture Month and we are pleased to once again offer free and low-cost activities for members and the public during the month of April.
These annual events got started to highlight the power of good design in making our communities better places to live, work and play and also generate a discussion of design in Hawaii. We hope by elevating awareness of architecture, you will be inspired by your surroundings on a daily basis.

Free Architecture Month Kickoff with Design Presentations

To kick-off Architecture Month in Hawai`i, our AIA-Honolulu Film Committee is normally hosting an event featuring presenters representing a diverse swath of Hawai`i’s architectural, cultural, art, fashion and journalism communities.

Hawaii Public Radio Pledge Drive
Help support Quality Programming and the Arts in Hawaii
AIA Honolulu architects have participated in the Hawaii Public Radio pledge drive for many years and truly enjoy taking part in keeping quality programs and arts alive in Hawaii. During our shift, AIA Honolulu architects answer the phones, take pledges and offer challenges.

Free Design "Firm Crawl" Open House
Learn more about architectural design, interior design, landscape design and meet the people shaping Hawaii’s built environment during this annual tradition that is open to the public. Visit numerous design firms in the downtown business district and Kaka’ako will open their doors to the public, inviting the community in to learn more about the projects that the firms are engaged in and the architects behind those designs.
Free Oahu Public Film Night
You are invited to watch a free film of interest to the design-minded. The film will be followed by a panel discussion by AIA Honolulu member-architects on the issues that were raised by the filmmakers.

Cost: Free ($5 suggested donation at the door)
Architectural Walking Tour
The public is invited to join in a Walking Tour, led by AIA member-architects – a rare opportunity to learn more about this Hawaii institution from a design perspective.
Docent-guided tours explore a chosen area on Oahu. Many of the docents have been involved in the planning and design of the chose area, adding to their knowledge of the buildings. Groups of 10 can learn more about the buildings and area during the walking tour that lasts about two hours.
Cost: $15/person supports AIA expenses. Advance payment and reservation required.
Free Urban Sketchers Oahu
No RSVP Required! USk O‘ahu and AIA Honolulu Announce Free Sketch Event
Sketchers of all skill levels, this is for you! AIA Honolulu teams up with Urban Sketchers Oahu for a morning of sketching. Urban Sketchers Oahu’s goal is to raise awareness, interest, and enthusiasm for sketching on location as a way to document local scenes, express oneself artistically, and make connections within and outside our community. Art is then shared online at the Urban Sketchers Oahu website via Flickr.
Bank of Hawaii Family Sunday
No RSVP Required! Join AIA Honolulu on Bank of Hawaii Sunday at the Spalding House during Architecture Month. Children of all ages will be able to participate in a creative projects matching this years theme. The activity introduces children to the architectural experience and their imagination is the limit.
Architectural Photography Workshop
Includes light refreshments upon arrival, followed by a pre-photo shoot lecture on composition, strategies and techniques. The group will then embark on a three-hour photo shoot in the greater downtown Honolulu area. Following this, attendees will participate in a three-hour critique session with editing examples in the Lightroom software that provides each participant with the opportunity to share selected images and receive professional advice on photography techniques and strategies, image editing in Lightroom and image composition. Participants will receive one 16x20 image printed and mounted by Honblue, Inc.7
Ideally required: Digital Camera, laptop to download and review images, thumb drive to transfer images to CFA server. Lunch is not included.
Cost: $75 AIA Members, $105 Non-Members & $55 Students, includes light refreshments. Session limited to 20 participants.
BIG ISLAND SECTION EVENTS
Free Public Film Nights
No RSVP Required! To celebrate April as Architecture Month across the state, the Hawaii Island Section of AIA Honolulu invites the public to join them in a free architectural related film.
Kona Young Architects Workshop "Imagining Paper Architecture"
Students will work with architecture and art mentors to design and then construct a model of an imaginary world. Students will learn design, model building, and documentation techniques. Students should bring: Lunch, water bottle, notebook & pens, camera device if they want to take home pictures of their creation. DMAC & Architects will provide: Paper, cutting tools, paint, tape.

Tuition: $10 per participant (limited to 15 participants).
