Our History
2026 marks a remarkable century of architectural leadership, community, and creativity for AIA in Hawaii. This year isn’t just about looking back — it’s about amplifying the power of design to shape community.

AIA Hawai‘i Begins
In 1926, Honolulu listed 11 architectural offices and 29 registered architects. With no organization dedicated solely to advancing the profession, Hawai‘i’s architects set out to change that. On October 13, 1926, the AIA granted the charter officially establishing the Hawai‘i Chapter.

Our Statewide Structure
In 1989, two local chapters were established under the AIA Hawai‘i umbrella. AIA Honolulu serves across O‘ahu, Hawai‘i Island, and Kaua‘i, while AIA Maui supports the growing architectural community on Maui.

In 2026, AIA Hawaii serves 850+ architects, associates, and allied professionals throughout the state. We offer continuing education to assist with meeting licensure requirements, advocate at all tiers of government on behalf of the profession, and provide opportunities to network and socialize with individuals passionate about architecture.

100 Projects for 100 Years
East-West Center
Designed by: I. M. Pei & Associates and Young & Henderson
The East-West Center complex occupies twenty one acres on the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa campus. It includes conference facilities, three residence halls, and office buildings. The Center received an Honor Award at the 1963 Design Awards and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Canlis Restaurant Waikiki
Designed by: Wimberly & Cook, AIA
Canlis Restaurant opened in March 1954 and quickly became one of Waikīkī’s most celebrated architectural landmarks. It received an Honor Award for Excellence in 1955 and the 25‑Year Award in 1985 at the AIA Hawaii Design Awards, recognizing its enduring architectural significance.
Its signature features included a copper‑clad, high‑beamed roof with 18 skylight “bubbles,” full‑height louvers that captured the tradewinds, and heavy timber framing set within tropical landscaping.
Palau Pacific Resort
Designed by: Media Five Ltd.
The Palau Pacific Resort, designed by what is now M5 Architecture, was built to be lower than the surrounding palm trees and imitates traditional Palauan buildings. It boasted early ecotourism principles featuring a lobby inspired by the traditional abai and sustainable water, energy, and wastewater systems.
The project earned a 1988 AIA Design Award for excellence and features locally crafted storyboards, artwork, and native‑flora landscaping.
Kotohira Jinsha Temple Congregation Hall
Designed by: Thomas T. Agawa, AIA
In this 1982 Design Award for Excellence project, Thomas T. Agawa, AIA expands the Kotohira Jinsha Temple with an angled congregation hall that strengthens the site’s processional sequence and unifies gathering, cultural, and educational spaces. The project grew from close collaboration between the architect, congregation, and skilled craftspeople, extending the character of Shinto tradition through every detail.
Honolulu International Airport
Designed by: Vladimir Ossipoff, FAIA, & Associates, and Sam Chang Architects
One of the most complex undertakings of its time, Honolulu International Airport combined major renovations with new construction across four phases and more than 20 bid packages. Its open, airy character, integrated landscaping, and human‑scaled interiors set a new standard for airport design.
The project received a Merit Award at the 1976 AIA Design Awards for its innovative response to Hawai‘i’s climate and culture and its reinforcement for a strong sense of place.
Wing Wo Tai Renovation
Designed by: Anderson/Reinhardt, Ltd.
An inventive adaptive‑reuse project, the Wing Wo Tai Renovation transformed a deteriorating 1916 Chinatown structure and gave it new life with a three-story modern interior while preserving its historic stone façade. By raising floors, revealing timber trusses, and adding skylights, the project created courtyard space for a ground floor restaurant with two story offices above. The project earned a Commendation Award in the 1979 AIA Hawaii Design Awards.
Hawaiian Energy House
Designed by: James Pearson, AIA
Guided by climate, comfort, and honest materials, this experimental home designed by Jim Pearson and UH students on campus embraced natural ventilation, deep overhangs, solar heating, and lightweight construction to create an energy‑smart island dwelling rooted in local tradition. Its climate‑responsive approach earned a Merit Award in the 1976 AIA Hawaii Design Awards.
Aliʻiōlani Hale Renovation & Restoration
Designed by: Architects Hawaii Ltd.
Restoring the dignity of Hawai‘i’s 1874 judicial landmark, the Aliʻiōlani Hale renovation revived original finishes, reinstated historic spaces, and modernized the building for contemporary use. Through careful research and preservation of its architectural fabric, the project earned the Excellence in Architecture Involving Extended Use Award in the 1982 AIA Hawaii Design Awards.
Rare Discovery Shop, ward warehouse
Designed by: Hogan, Chapman, Cobeen, Weitz, Desai & Associates
The clever interior compartments allowed this specialty shop within Ward Warehouse, the “Rare Discovery” space, to transform cluttered infrastructure into an intimate, art‑focused retail experience. Layered lighting, varied ceiling heights, and crafted display zones created a sense of exploration and enhanced visual excitement. The project earned an Excellence Award at the 1979 AIA Hawaii Design Awards.
Lester McCoy Pavilion, ala moana park

Designed as a low‑profile complex of interwoven indoor‑outdoor spaces, the Lester McCoy Pavilion was crafted to weather beautifully with constant community activity and offer a pedestrian‑first “long‑cut” experience. Closed since 2019 for upgrades and pandemic impacts, it’s slated to partially reopen in 2026.
The project was selected for the 1976 AIA Hawaii Design Awards.
American Security Bank restoration
Designed by:
Franklin Gray & Associates, Inc.
A thoughtful restoration and adaptive‑use effort on the edge of Chinatown, the American Security Bank project reflects a strong partnership between owner and architect. Their commitment to quality design and the revitalization of an older structure earned a 1982 Special Award for Civic Enrichment at the AIA Hawaii Design Awards. Known as the Hocking Building, this property was most recently converted into affordable housing in 2024.
Wailea Town Center
Designed by: Edward Sullam, FAIA & Associates
Designed as a cultural hub within Wailea’s new resort district, this center used simple materials, shaded walkways, and a town‑square layout to frame sweeping mauka‑makai views. Its stepped paths follow the natural slope, creating a timeless gathering place that earned a 1978 AIA Hawaii Honor Award.
Mānele Bay Hotel
Designed by: Group 70 International & Arnold C. Savrann, AIA
Overlooking Hulopo‘e Beach, Mānele Bay Hotel takes form as a series of cascading villa courts shaped by multicultural gardens, Mediterranean walls, arcades, patterned puka blocks, and multi‑level parlors. Designed to feel grand yet welcoming, its stepped layout earned jury praise for clarity and resort character, receiving a 1991 AIA NW and Pacific Region Merit Award.
Bowlen Lath House
Designed by: Norman Lacayo, AIA, Inc.
At just 800 square feet, the Bowler Lath House makes thoughtful use of its small site, bringing in light, breezes, and wide views. Designed with the quiet charm of a grown‑up tree house, it offers a simple, comfortable retreat that earned a 1981 Award for Excellence in Architecture.
William S. Richardson School of Law Library
Designed by: Robert M. Matsushita & Associates, AIA
Designed to support legal education with a 30,000‑square‑foot, single‑story facility, the library addressed a challenging narrow site between Dole Street and the former Mānoa Quarry. Earth berms, deep overhangs, and careful siting reduce noise and soften the scale of the long concrete structure. Its thoughtful response to site and climate earned a 1983 Award of Merit.
Bernice Pauahi Bishop Memorial Chapel & Heritage Center
Designed by: Kauahikaua & Chun Architects
Honored with a 1992 Excellence Award, the chapel features a custom 2,900‑pipe organ designed by the architects. The Heritage Center was shaped around Pauahi’s personal belongings, using perfect geometric forms and a pyramidal roof symbolizing eternal life. The result is a serene, deeply rooted complex that the jury praised as a “very special place” destined to grow in stature over time.
