AIA Hawai‘i Book Club (2 HSWs)
Each quarter, we’ll gather around a book tangential to architecture—think design, culture, place, history, climate, or the forces that shape the built environment in unexpected ways. The event features a compelling guest speaker who will draw out the book’s big ideas and connect them to practice in Hawaiʻi, all hosted at a cool, thoughtfully chosen venue.
Whether you’ve read every page, skimmed the introduction, or are just coming for the conversation, the AIA Hawaiʻi Book Club is about shared curiosity and expanding how we think about our work and our world.
Book Club Q4: AIA Honolulu Center for Architecture!
For our fourth Book Club, we have chosen “Intellectual Anarchy" by Dr. Patrick Sullivan, CEO of Oceanit.
Intellectual Anarchy is about how we can find disruptive solutions to hard problems, problems so difficult that they can seem impossible, such as climate change, sustainable energy, and rising healthcare costs. Problems of that magnitude demand radical new ideas—an incremental approach won’t work. Their solutions seemingly come out of left field, defying conventional wisdom, and overturning existing industries, practices, and business models
This book details the Intellectual Anarchy methodology followed at Oceanit for generating disruptive solutions to these problems and taking them from the idea stage all the way to the market—”Mind-to-Market”—including financing innovations to overcome the scarcity of venture capital anywhere away from the conventional tech hubs.
Intellectual Anarchy provokes critical questions that challenge conventional thinking about architecture, design, innovation and the future of the profession.

Our moderator/presenter will be the author, Dr. Sullivan.
Dr. Patrick Sullivan is a scientist, engineer, technologist, entrepreneur, businessman, public speaker, and futurist. He founded Oceanit in 1985 and developed its “Intellectual Anarchy” approach to the art of disruptive innovation. Dr. Sullivan has launched numerous private equity financed start-up and spin-out companies. In 2016, Hawaii Business Magazine named him “CEO of the Year,” and Hawaii Business News named him a “2019 Titan of Technology.”
Dr. Sullivan will relate Intellectual Anarchy to architecture and show examples of how tech is changing; new methods and materials that create new design opportunities, life experiences, etc.
