AIA Honolulu is the go-to place for information on the architectural/design profession and related building industries. Visit this page often for updated resources including articles to help you understand more about architecture and design, and how you can work with an AIA architect to build your vision. We'll also include links of interest to other allied building organizations and agencies that can offer you assistance as your design/building project gets underway.

Resources Around the State:

Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA):
The DCCA services include the licensing of Hawaii's professionals including architects, engineers, landscape architects, and others. At their website you can look up information about businesses, licensed and individuals registered with the DCCA. They also handle consumer complaints against Hawaii Businesses and licensed professionals.

Department of Planning and Permitting (DPP):
The DPP is responsible for issuing land use permits and building permits, in addition to maintaining and updating the State's Master Plans for development. Their website include various links to download permit applications and forms and answers to questions about when permits for construction and building are required.

Department of Business Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT):
The DBEDT's web site includes links to their many divisions, including the Energy Branch, part of their Strategic Industries Division.  Here you can find information on Hawaii's energy sources, ways to promote sustainable energy resources and strategies to improve energy efficiency in our government, commercial and residential buildings and facilities.

U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC):
The USGBC is one good source for information on "Green Buildings"  including information on LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). This Green Building Rating System® (LEED) is a voluntary, consensus-based national standard for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings. American Society of Interior Designers Hawaii Chapter:
The ASID is a professional association for interior designers.  View ASID Hawaii Chapter website.

Hawaii Architectural Foundation:
The Hawaii Architectural Foundation (HAF) is a non-profit organization that connects people to the profound influence of design and stimulates education and public engagement in shaping our island communities.  View HAF website.

Hawaii Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects:
The ASLA's purpose is the advancement of knowledge, education, and skill in the art and science of landscape architecture as an instrument of service for the public welfare. View ASLA Hawaii Chapter website.

Resources on Schools of Architecture
The AIA and AIAS (see listing below for "AIAS") have developed a new online portal for information related to careers in architecture. Learn more.

The National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB):
This is the sole agency authorized to accredit U.S. Professional degree programs in architecture. Their site contains among other items a listing of NAAB accredited programs in architecture. Learn more.

The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB):
The NCARB also offers resources for persons interested in a career in architecture. View the NCARB website and visit their consumer section to learn more about pathways to architecture and links to other architectural organizations.

The American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS):
The AIAS is the official voice of students to the educational system and the profession of architecture and design.  Learn more about the AIAS whose national offices are co-located in Washington DC in the headquarters of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).  Links include information on local AIAS Chapters, membership and student resources including questions to ask in choosing an Architecture School and links to online resources about careers in architecture..
